Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
